Withdrawal in 1973

In 1973 when the United States decided to withdraw from the Vietnam war, many American families were happy because they were able to reunite with their husbands, sons, and siblings. But most importantly, the long war finally ended.

The U.S. lost their title of being invincible since they were defeated. The U.S. army was discredited for years because of the lost. The 1973 War Powers Resolution was passed to forbid the president from sending U.S. troops into combat for more than 90 days.

Many veterans faced PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). The veterans were quite young when they've entered war. They served the country at the age 18, and that's an adolescent age. Usually at that age they're minds are still developing. But because of the events at war, they were traumatized. Most of them were either physically or emotionally effected.

Because of the war, about two and half million Vietnamese died. 900,000 were Viet Cong and 223,000 were anti-communists.
After the Northern Vietnam's victory over Vietnam, Southern Vietnamese fled Vietnam. They all feared of being mistreated. Even government officials and the president of the south fled because they were afraid of being captured, tortured, then killed. Some were relocated to a the Philippines.

The Vietnam Veteran Memorial

Picture
The Vietnam Veteran Memorial was to created to remember those veterans who lost their lives during the war. It was made to honor those to sacrificed their lives for a cause. This image depicts the feelings of Americans. They felt relief that the war had ended but they were in pain because they're loved ones are gone. The result of the war was the loss. It was the first war that the U.S. had lost in. Veterans who survived the war, suffered from post traumic stress disorder (PTSD) because most of them fought at the age of 18 and that is still the age of adolescent. The events of the war traumatized them and thoughts of the war remain in their heads that haunted them.

Agent Orange

After the war, and the war tactics used, Vietnam's buildings, roads, and crops were all destroyed. Agent Orange destroyed a majority of their crops causing starvation and death. Many animals also died from it. Some of the unused bombs or weapons sometimes caused deaths of those ordinary civilians if they came upon it. Others suffer the long term consequences of Agent Orange. Children were often born with deformities and grew up being segregated from the other children. They were unable to live the normal life.
