Martin Luther King Jr. making a speech on the Vietnam War
"I speak as a child of God and brother to the suffering poor of Vietnam and the poor of America who are paying the double price of smashed hopes at home and death and corruption in Vietnam."
 (54) (The Vietnam War-David M.Haugen)

-Martin Luther King Jr. makes a speech about how he feels about Vietnamese and the Americans. In this quote Martin Luther King Jr. realizes that both countries are suffering because of the war. He says that many soldiers are dying from the war "smashes hopes at home" because families are senting off their mens to go fight, but end up dying. He also talks about how The Vietnam War is making families go poor because of the money they have to provide to the war. So families are losing lots of money because the war needs money for food and mainly weapons. Poor families have to go through more than others because they are already poor and they're just paying more money for a war that America put themselves in.

Picture
                          I See

  1. A  very large woman with a fur wrap with the words "Vietnam War” written on it.
  2. The overweight woman is wearing a gaudy dress that is tight fitting and too short
  3. The woman  is wearing a large necklace, earrings and rings
  4. The overweight woman is smiling
  5. The overweight woman has her arm linked to the man in the middle with the word administration written on his jacket
  6. The man in the middle seems to be pulled by the heavy set women
  7. The man in the middle is talking to the woman in rags with the words U.S. urban needs on her tattered dress
  8. The woman on the right is the smallest figure
  9. The woman is very thin and dressed in a tattered dress.
  10. The title of the cartoon says: There is enough money to support both of you….Now doesn’t that make you feel better?

                    It Means

  1. Shows that the war is the center of attention in the U. S.
  2. Shows the financial waste of the war and the American dislike for the cost of war.
  3. Shows waste of money on the fighting of the war.
  4. Shows how some people were making money on the war so that had a reason to smile.
  5. This shows how the war is supported by President Johnson
  6. It shows how President Johnson’s presidency was being overpowered by the war
  7. President Johnson is trying to convince the people of America that he is  still concerned about their needs at home
  8. Shows the lack of concern of President Johnson’s administration on the needs of the poor at home
  9. Shows the cutbacks in U.S aid to their own needy in order to finance the war
  10. It is clearly unconvincing after looking at the wastes of the war and the needs of some
Summary/POV:This political cartoon is an anti-war statement about how the war is wasting and draining money away from needy Americans.  It shows that the Vietnam War has become wasteful and that the President appears to be being led by American involvement in the war and overlooking the needs of the people at home.  President Johnson’s attempt to say that the American government could fund the war and service the needs of the American people is clearly not believable.
