Economic and Political Problems During the War Lead to the Social Failures

-Political Issues-

The Postwar Impact of Vietnam Harvard Sitikoff

"The United States also paid a high political cost for the Vietnam War. It weakened public faith in government, and in the honesty and competence of its leaders."

"People began to question and mistrust the actions of the government."

-These quotes talks about how the United States having to paid a lot of money for the war. It made the people of the country lose their trust in their governments and leaders because of the political problem they already caused. This makes the citizens confused because they don't know if they should trust their leaders anymore since of what happened with the war and they would think something like this might would happen again. Since the people lost trust of the leaders, they might not get it back. Both quotes shows the political cost to the United States.

Baby in a Box Chick Harrity 1973

Picture
Baby girl, Tran Thie Het Nhanny lying in a cardboard next to her brother on a street.
Two young siblings who are lying on the streets of Saigon (today known as Ho Chi Minh City) begging for food, money and shelter. This photograph taken by Chick Harrity inspired Americans to raise money for her to come over to the United States to be taken care of. This image shows a political problem because the governments aren't taking care of the people and children of their nation, it is their responsibility. Instead governments aren't doing their jobs as you can see in this image. Only when this photo is brought to the U.S, the people of another country is there for those kids and taking them in to take care of them.

Attacked by the South Nick Ut 1972

Picture
Phan Thi Kim running down the road after a South Vietnamese Air Force napalm attack.
A young girl  named Phan Thi Kim who was from a peasant family who owned a small restaurant lived in Tran Bang in North Vietnam. This city had been attacked by the South Vietnamese Air force napalm attack (thickening/gelling mixed with gasoline) this attack gave this nine years old girl several burns on her back. The North Vietnam military took over their homes so they could protect Tran Bang incase it was to be bombed again. Even though this image shows horror from these kids, the government did want to protect Tran Bang, but the question is did the government really want to protect the people of Tran Bang or just winning the war? The government was supposed to protect Tran Bang, but didn't because he should have thought about all the possible places the North would bomb.

Buddhist Monk's Protest 1963

Picture
Buddhist monk, Quang Duc's protest
A Buddhist monk named Quang Duc burned himself on a Saigon Street (today known as Ho Chi Minh City) He is protesting on their political problems of how the government are treating them during the war. The governments are not treating the monks fair and other people must have felt the same way. This lead to the downfall after the war because of what the government did not see and did not do during the war. This monk burns himself to death and people say that he did not sceam or move he just sat there in stillness. It shows that the government was so bad that this monk had to burn himself and try to make the government realize what was going on and how people were feeling.

Women in the North in the War Field  Mark Schynert 2005

Picture
Women nurses in Vietnam taking care of a soldier
Women in North Vietnam had to become nurses and doctors to the war, they would travel with the soldiers and disguised their hospitals so it wouldn't been found or seen. If it was to be found or seen then they would have to move to another place because they could have gotten killed or bombed. Women had to go out and search for food and certain plants to make medicine for the sick soldiers. They had to eat leaves because that was all that they had. Also women would get lost and never be found or even looked for. This shows that the government did not give these women, who put their lives on the line to go out and help the sick soldiers. The government did not realize that women were also dying by helping. Many women got lost of killed by  South soldiers. The government did not give these women protection or even food.
